This faculty role supports medical students through longitudinal coaching, academic guidance, and small-group teaching within a medical school curriculum. The work centers on helping first-year and upper-level students build professional identity, self-directed learning, reflective practice, and residency preparation skills. When covering for another guide, the role also includes one-on-one coaching, progress review, committee participation, and student community-building activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Facilitate small-group teaching sessions for first-year medical students and other curriculum blocks on select Wednesdays.
- Provide career-advising sessions to help students prepare residency applications.
- Participate in monthly faculty development sessions, guide check-ins, and annual retreat activities.
- Coach assigned students one-on-one when covering a guide on leave, including progress review and learning goal setting.
- Address urgent student concerns and coordinate with student life and campus referral resources as needed.
- Document student meetings and maintain communication with program leadership around student concerns.
- Participate in Trek Progress Committee meetings when covering an extended leave assignment.
- Support orientation, social events, and student leader mentorship to strengthen community building.
Required
- MD or DO from an accredited university.
- Board-certified physician.
- Eligible to obtain a faculty appointment at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
- Permission from the clinician’s clinic or department to assume the role.
- Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Preferred
- Two or more years of medical student teaching experience.
- Experience with coaching or mentoring.
- Demonstrated interest in medical student education and small-group facilitation.
- Interest in health systems science.
- Commitment to lifelong learning, growth mindset, and reflective, humanistic teaching.
