Provide independent medical exams and peer reviews for workers’ compensation cases, using clinical expertise to assess the medical appropriateness of care and services. Work includes reviewing records, applying evidence-based criteria, and preparing clear, well-supported determinations within required turnaround times. The role is performed as a 1099 independent contractor with cases assigned as they arise, and the schedule and caseload can be customized within a standard Monday through Friday work week.
Key Responsibilities
- Review medical records and answer client questions using state-mandated or other evidence-based criteria.
- Conduct independent medical exams in a clean, safe, professional setting.
- Document clear rationale and supporting evidence for each determination.
- Return completed cases by the required due date and time.
- Maintain active credentialing, state licensure, and any required certifications.
- Participate in required orientation and training.
- Identify and respond to quality assurance, regulatory, audit, deposition, and court-related issues as needed.
- Provide copies of criteria used in the review with the report when required.
Required
- Board certification in Orthopaedic Surgery, Pulmonary Disease, or Pain Management.
- Worker’s compensation experience.
- Ability to maintain a current West Virginia license if practicing in that jurisdiction.
- Ability to provide independent medical review and examination services.
Preferred
- West Virginia medical license.
