Physicians review medical records and provide advisory opinions for legal/independent medical review cases, focusing on medical necessity, usual and customary charges, and Texas counter-affidavit questions. The work may also include CPT code analysis, fee schedule review, and support for deposition or trial testimony. Cases are contract-based and can be accepted according to individual schedule availability.
Key Responsibilities
- Review medical records and answer clinical questions related to the case.
- Assess medical necessity of treatment and the appropriateness of charges.
- Analyze CPT coding in relation to usual and customary rates and Texas fee schedules.
- Complete counter-affidavits addressing clinical concerns and fee-related issues.
- Provide advisory opinions for legal clients without establishing a doctor-patient relationship.
- Respond to clarification requests and prepare addenda when needed.
- Support deposition and trial testimony when requested.
- Submit reports, supporting criteria, and case work by the required deadline.
Required
- Texas medical license.
- Board certification.
- Experience reviewing medical records in a physician advisor, IME, or utilization review context.
- Ability to evaluate medical necessity and charges using clinical expertise.
Preferred
- Experience with counter-affidavit, testimony, or deposition work.
- Experience analyzing CPT codes, usual and customary rates, and state fee schedules.
