This physician consultant role focuses on remote medical record review for orthopedic cases, assessing causation, medical necessity, and the appropriateness of treatment based on documentation, radiographs, procedure reports, and treatment notes. The work centers on writing formal clinical summaries that explain whether an incident caused or worsened a condition and whether subsequent care was reasonable and necessary. The role also includes collaboration with program staff and may involve hearings with some travel as needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Review medical records to assess causation, treatment appropriateness, and medical necessity.
- Evaluate consistency between diagnoses, procedures, and clinical documentation.
- Analyze radiographs, procedure reports, treatment notes, and other supporting records.
- Document expert opinions in formal, professionally written summary reports.
- Collaborate with program staff to develop evidence-based conclusions.
- Respond to or attend hearings as required, including some travel.
- Use accepted practice standards to support findings and conclusions.
Required
- MD or DO with board certification in Orthopedic Surgery.
- Active, unrestricted medical license in good standing.
- At least 3-5 years of experience performing expert clinical reviews of treatment records.
- Extensive clinical expertise in orthopedics and orthopedic surgery.
- Ability to determine causation, exacerbation of pre-existing conditions, and medical necessity from the record.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and SharePoint.
Preferred
- Experience developing formal reports used in litigation.
- Experience communicating complex clinical information to diverse audiences.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
