Provide court-ordered psychiatric evaluations for patients in crisis, including individuals on observation or inpatient units, with visits completed in person or by telehealth. The role focuses on diagnosing, assessing capacity and risk, and making recommendations regarding court-ordered treatment, with some court testimony by videoconference, phone, or audio-visual platform. The clinician also reviews nursing assessments, EHR history, collateral information, and legal petitions, and works closely with interdisciplinary and legal partners to support the evaluation process.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct court-ordered psychiatric evaluations and document diagnoses, risk assessments, and treatment recommendations.
- Provide assessments for capacity to consent, progress toward treatment goals, and discharge planning when indicated.
- Review nursing health assessments, medical history, review of systems, and available EHR/collateral information.
- Initiate communication with primary care physicians, emergency room clinicians, and outpatient behavioral health providers.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary staff, the COE Program Manager, and medical leadership to support unit operations and case escalation.
- Work with the community and legal system to review involuntary petitions and support Court Ordered Evaluation and Treatment processes.
- Prepare affidavits and may testify in court regarding evaluation findings.
- Use established guidelines and applicable state processes related to COE/COT evaluations.
Required
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO).
- Board certified in Psychiatry.
- Current Arizona medical license.
- At least 4 years of post-doctoral experience, including accredited psychiatric residency training.
- Familiarity with Arizona Title 36 as it relates to COE/COT processes and procedures.
- Ability to complete required credentialing, including NPI, Medallion enrollment, Medicare enrollment, and Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card.
Preferred
- Prior experience performing court-ordered evaluations.
- Prior experience treating court-ordered patients.
