Provide remote telepsychiatry for incarcerated patients enrolled in competency restoration and early stabilization programs, with a focus on felony defendants found incompetent to stand trial because of mental illness. Manage psychiatric medications, monitor symptoms tied to competency barriers, and document progress thoroughly in a forensic correctional setting. Work closely with multidisciplinary treatment teams, jail medical staff, and correctional partners to coordinate behavioral health and medical care.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct telepsychiatry visits for incarcerated patients in JBCT and EASS programs.
- Provide medication management for assigned patients with serious mental illness and related psychiatric conditions.
- Document psychiatric evaluations and progress notes in a timely, competency-focused manner.
- Participate in treatment team meetings to review medication strategies, competency progress, and barriers to restoration.
- Coordinate care with multidisciplinary behavioral health staff and jail medical teams for parallel psychosocial and medical needs.
- Review dashboards, medication administration reports, and sick call lists as indicated.
- Maintain alignment with applicable Department of State Hospital, sheriff’s office, and company policies and standards of care.
- Communicate discrepancies or care concerns to forensic mental health leadership as needed.
Required
- Current, unrestricted California medical license or nurse practitioner license.
- Psychiatry board certification or PMHNP credentialing.
- At least 1 year of direct practice experience in correctional mental health or acute behavioral health.
- Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to obtain and maintain jail clearance.
- Willingness to evaluate patients remotely via video visit.
Preferred
- Active ABPN board certification in psychiatry or ANCC certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
- Prior experience in a competency restoration setting.
- Prior experience working with sworn correctional staff.
- Working knowledge of California competency restoration law and involuntary psychotropic medication laws.
- Current DEA registration.
- Familiarity with correctional EMR platforms such as CorEMR, TechCare, or Sapphire.
- Experience triaging and managing acute psychiatric crises.
