Provide remote telepsychiatry for incarcerated adults with felony charges who have been found incompetent to stand trial, with a focus on competency restoration, medication management, and psychiatric evaluation. Care also includes attention to serious mental illness, neurocognitive disorders, and related behavioral health needs within jail-based treatment programs. The role works closely with a multidisciplinary team, jail medical staff, and correctional partners to support court-ordered treatment and document progress thoroughly.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide telepsychiatry visits for incarcerated patients in JBCT and EASS programs.
- Manage psychiatric medications and monitor response, barriers, and competency-related symptoms.
- Complete competency-focused psychiatric evaluations and progress notes in a timely, thorough manner.
- Participate in treatment team meetings and discuss medication strategies and restoration progress.
- Coordinate care with multidisciplinary treatment staff and jail medical teams for mental health and medical needs.
- Review dashboards, medication administration reports, and sick call lists as indicated.
- Work collaboratively with Department of State Hospital, sheriff’s office, and internal clinical leadership.
- Serve as collaborating physician for psychiatric nurse practitioners as needed.
Required
- Current, unrestricted California medical license.
- Board certification in psychiatry.
- At least 1 year of direct practice experience in correctional mental health or acute behavioral health.
- Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to obtain and maintain jail clearance.
- Willingness to evaluate patients remotely via video visit platform.
Preferred
- Prior experience in a competency restoration setting, including jail-based, community, or state hospital programs.
- Prior experience working with sworn staff or correctional officers.
- Working knowledge of California competency restoration and involuntary psychotropic medication laws.
- Current DEA registration.
- Familiarity with NCCHC and ACA standards.
- Experience with correctional EMR platforms such as CorEMR, TechCare, or Sapphire.
